Brief Description

Gangtok is the capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Sikkim which was a part of the three Himalayan Kingdoms of Nepal, Sikkim and bhutan. The original inhabitants from time immemorial were the lepchas. The bhutias migrated from tibet and in 1642 the Namgyal Dynasty was founded with Phuntsok Namgyal as its first king. He presided over a social system based on tibetan lamaistic buddhism. People of Nepalese origin migrated to Sikkim over a century ago.
